Climbing Mount Kenya via Sirimon route is the most popular hiking tour since it is gentle to climbers and is on the drier side of the mountain. This route makes it easy to access Mount Kenya most of the time. With beautiful scenery like the green lakes and plenty of wildlife to enjoy. Accommodation on this route is in huts though camping is possible.
An overnight acclimatization for the Mount Kenya hike at the base in Nanyuki town is advisable and can be arranged for at an extra fee.
We leave Nairobi at 8 am for Nanyuki town for lunch, taking about 4 hours. Then proceed to the foot of Mount Kenya at Sirimon Gate, 1 hour at 2440m. From the gate follow the track as it winds up the highest mountain in Kenya through the forest which becomes heath land after about 3 hrs. About 3½ hours from the gate the track veers right to old Moses the first camp on Sirimon route at 3300m where we have dinner and spend the night.
We continue climbing Mount Kenya after breakfast, branching left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the path brings us to Ontulili River where we briefly rest to drink and refill our water bottles. Then continue through the Moorland and crossing Liki North up to Mackinder’s Valley; the view of the highest mountain in Kenya main is stunning from this valley. We settle for an early dinner and night rest at the Shipton Camp the second camp on Sirimon route at 4200 meters
After the much-needed rest, we attempt hiking Mount Kenya all the way to the summit. The journey begins at 3am. We climb Mount Kenya up a rocky path that leads to point Lenana at 6:30am after 3hrs just in time for the sunrise. The soft lighting of the sun at dawn is picture perfect. It will leave you awestruck as it ignites everything else leaving new life along its path. We then begin our descent down the highest mountain in Kenya to Shipton Camp for about 2hrs for breakfast then down to Old Moses Camp for dinner and overnight.
A gentle descent to the Sirimon gate after breakfast that takes around 2 hours three to reach the foot of Mount Kenya. We find an awaiting vehicle to take us back to Nairobi.
