Enjoy a magnificent Mount Kenya hike via the two most scenic routes in the second highest mountain in Africa: Chogoria and Sirimon routes. The chogoria route offers hikers scenic gentle hikes and a couple of thrilling steep ascents. The Sirimon route, on the other hand, is mainly made up of challenging yet engaging hikes that are sure to bring out the hiker in you.
This package combines both routes so as to give you the best of both passages. The combination of the two routes and six days of expedition will give you ample time to enjoy your journey up Mount Kenya.
An exciting hike through fairy forests, wistful moorlands, magnificent wildlife, high waterfalls, and striking sceneries.
Here is your itinerary for the journey.
The Journey begins with a pick up at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi and we departs from the city at 0800hrs. We drive through the agricultural countryside up to Chogoria town, where we have lunch at an altitude of 2300m. Chogoria town is a metropolitan small town vastly rich in agriculture because of the mountainside weather and rich soi. After lunch, we drive up to the bamboo forest edge where we commence our Mount Kenya hike through a dense bamboo forest. The distance through the bamboo forest is of 5 -6 km, after which we get to the Mt Kenya Bandas. Here, we have dinner and overnight stay at the Meru Mount Kenya Bandas:
After breakfast, we begin our hike for the day at a nice and easy pace, On the way, animals may be seen on the way gently walking and passing through the Nithi river. You will also view species of huge forest trees forming a canopy. Some of the trees on along our Mount Kenya hike are over 80 years old.
We continue with our journey through tussock grass,to the altitude of 3300m followed by a slightly longer walk via Lake Ellis where we enjoy scenic views of Mugi hill, Ithanguni, and the Giants Billiards Table. We then have lunch on the banks of a stream and cut up the left-hand hillside to our camp afterwards. The day’s journey will have taken us at about 3,600m, well away from any of the more “touristy” areas.
Similarly, we have an early start followed by a three-hour trek along a beaten track. The track follows a ridge which will eventually let us rejoin the tourists. Our journey then continues on the normal Chogoria route at an altitude of about 4,100m. At this altitude, we’ll enjoy breath taking views over the Gorges Valley and the Northern Moorlands.
Lunch is served at a small stream crossing, after which we continue climbing Mount Kenya for a further hour to the Mintos Hut area at 4200m for our overnight rest.
We spend the afternoon relaxing at camp, though a 10-minute walk to the “Temple” is recommended. The walk consists of a 150 meters vertical cliff climb. This section of the Mount Kenya climb gets its name from the praying position tourists often have to adopt when peering over the edge.
The day starts extra early with a predawn wake up at 2:30.for the summiting hike to point Lenana. The peak sits at an altitude of 4985m above sea level and considering the hike takes 3 hours, the early rise is necessary to catch the magical sunrise at 6:30 am. Point Lenana peak offers beautiful views of the African landscape including Mount Kilimanjaro on the south. After the photo session, we start our descent by heading down to shiptons camp for breakfast and spending the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the views. We have dinner and overnight stay at the camp
We begin the day with a hearty breakfast to prepare for the 6-hour descent via Mackinder`s valley. Our descent down Mount Kenya via the Sirimon route will take us through Sedeo and Terere peaks adored with high altitude flowers like scenecio, giant heathers, and lobelia terekii. Our Journey ends at the Old Moses camp (3,300m) where we have dinner and an overnight stay.
The final day of our Mount Kenya climb begins with a 2-hour descent through Mount Kenya rainforest. The journey continues past the sirimon equator area,to the sirimon national park gate where we’ll connect with your transport vehicle back to Nairobi arriving at 3:30pm evening.
