Climbing Mount Kenya through Chogoria is a hike safari combo with breathtaking sites like the gorges, loud and splashing Nithi falls, clean and sparkly rivers and springs, the Mugi hills perfect for bird watching and the magnificent lake Michaelson with the Temple above it. The Chogoria route is less crowded hence perfect for couples and loners. The Sirimon route used for descending is not only easy and relaxing but has the perfect view of the giant groundsels and lobelia.
NOTE: though hiking Mount Kenya in 4 days is possible, we highly recommend adding another day. The second day is very demanding and tedious as we climb up to Minto’s camp. There is an option of spending an extra day at Mintos to better acclimatize to the highest mountain in Kenya. We can relax and enjoy the view or better still spend the night at Nithi Camp that is halfway to Minto’s. A short walk to Nithi Falls or climb Mugi hill for better acclimatization is advised.
A drive from Nairobi to Chogoria town for lunch after which we take a 4*4 vehicle to drive up where we start our Mount Kenya hike via the bamboo forest. The vehicle helps in cutting most of the lower ground. We then do a 3-hour Mount Kenya hike to the Bandas for dinner and an overnight.
The day starts early after breakfast in order to climb Mount Kenya to the Mintos camp before its dark yet not sacrificing the magical sceneries the Chogoria route is famous for; the Giant billiards table, Mugi hills, the Gorges Valley and the view of the picks ahead and the vast plains below. A picnic lunch and occasional stop overs to drink and refill the water bottles. Dinner and an overnight stay at the Mount Kenya Minto’s campsite.
This is a busy Mount Kenya hiking day that starts at three am in order to enjoy sunrise at the peak of point Lenana. After that rewarding experience at the Pt. Lenana Mount Kenya summit, we descend to the Shipton’s camp for breakfast and continue further to judmier camp where we spend the night. Descending the highest mountain in Kenya via Sirimon route is gradual and exciting as you enjoy the Flora and Fauna through the Mackinder’s valley. We spend 11-12 hours hiking down Mount Kenya.
After the much-needed rest and breakfast in the morning, descend for 2-3 hours to the Sirimon Park gate at the foot of Mount Kenya to catch a vehicle for a drive back to Nairobi arriving late afternoon.
