Touch Africa’s Highest Point Via Marangu– 6-day Mount Kilimanjaro Hike

Marangu route commonly known as the “coco cola” or “tourist” route. It is a lot easier than the other Mt Kilimanjaro routes with a gradual and gentle ascent with enough time to acclimatize on the go. Accommodation on this route is mainly in huts no camping is allowed. It is popular with climbers and tends to be crowded since it is a lot cheaper and has high rates of success. On Marangu you use the same route to ascend and descend Mount Kilimanjaro

Hiking Mount Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route 6 Days Hike Itinerary

Day 1: Nairobi- Moshi/ Marangu

Depending on the budget we use road or air travel from Nairobi to Moshi in Tanzania. After lunch walk around the town, visit the Kilasiya falls in Marangu village or relax at the hotel preparing the equipment we’ll use to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Dinner and overnight at hotel in Moshi or Marangu helps with acclimatization since it is at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro

Day 2: Mount Kilimanjaro Moshi/ Marangu – Mandara Hut

Early morning after breakfast we head to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park for clearance at the gate. We walk through beautiful rain forest shadowing the path with a glimpse of light as sun rays peak through the trees. The Mt Kilimanjaro air is cool with a gentle breeze. The path leads to Mandara hut 5 hours later, dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

After breakfast we start our day’s Mont Kilimanjaro hike by leaving for the Horombo hut which takes about 5 hours. The steep path in the forest opens to a vast meadow with the view of Mount Kilimanjaro lesser-known summits; Mawenzi and Kibo summits. There is lots of time left to explore the surrounding area before dusk. Dinner and overnight at the Horombo hut at12140ft.

Day 4: Mt Kilimanjaro Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

An early morning start by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro through the saddle of Kilimanjaro, a barren land on the alpine that comprises of rocks and dust. The walk takes 5-7 hours before getting to the Kibo (15,320ft) hut where you are likely to meet with climbers from the Rongai route. Dinner and the last night before the summit attempt.

Day 5: Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak (Mount Kilimanjaro Summit) – Horombo Hut

Shortly after midnight armed with head torch and all the warm gear a body can handle the trek to the summit begins. It is a continuous steep scree slopes all the way to the top. The Mt Kilimanjaro sunrise at the Gilman’s point (1860ft) is the reward for the tiresome journey though there is also a certificate. You can choose to go back from here but it is better to continue to Mount Kilimanjaro summit Uhuru peak (19340ft). The sight of glaciers and the plains below while walking along the Crater’s rim is simply breathe taking. Descend to Horombo hut to rest after a long day.

Day 6: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate/Moshi/Nairobi

We descend Mount Kilimanjaro to the Marangu Gate marking the end of our Mount Kilimanjaro hike. There is a choice of spending the night in Moshi and there are Tanzanian safaris that you can add to this adventure. The second option is to head back to Nairobi.
