Mt Kenya Trekking: Sirimon – Chogoria 4 Days

This 4 days Mount Kenya package provides an adventurous and creative climb by combining two of the most scenic routes up Mount Kenya: Sirimon and Chogoria. The hike gives you a unique, and remarkably diverse trekking experience. The ascent starts from Sirimon coming off the west side of through the dry side of Mount Kenya. Hiking through the Sirimon route gives you great views of its giant trees and rocky terrain. The descent through the Chogoria path, on the other hand, is exactly different with its highland forests and lush bamboos.

The final summiting stretch to Point Lenana can be difficult, but it’s not any harder than any other ascent in East Africa. Unlike Mt Kilimanjaro or the Rwenzoris, the descent after summiting Mount Kenya through Sirimon the descent is generally considered easier.

Day 1: Nairobi - Sirimon gate- Old Moses camp. (3,300m) 3-4 hrs, 9km walk, 680m ascent.

The journey starts with after a pick up in Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi followed by a drive to Nanyuki town. We cross the equator en route to Sirimon Park gate where we have lunch (2660m). After the meal, we begin the Mount Kenya trek through the breathtaking montane forest, bamboo, and giant heather zone. The last stretch of day’s hike continues through the high-altitude moorland before reaching our first camp (Old Moses camp 3,300m) where we have dinner and stay overnight. This gentle stretch takes 3 - 4 hrs at the end of which we’ll have gained an elevation of 680m.

Day 2: Old Moses - Shipton camp (4200m). 7 hrs, 14km, 900m ascent.

After a hearty breakfast, we continue with our ascent, negotiating right at the junction. The hike takes us to Ontulili River before making our way through the Moorland. Along the way, we cross our second river (Liki North River) and continue our ascent until we reach Mackinders Valley. The valley offers amazing panoramic views filled with giant Lobelias of the valley towards the Shipton Camp. The camp’s surreal setting sitting below the towering snowcapped peaks makes the 7-hour trek worthwhile. The local wildlife population is made up of Sunbirds and local Hyrax.

Day 3: Shipton - Pt Lenana (4985m)- Mt Kenya Bandas (2800m) 11-12 hrs, 29km, 785 ascent, 2,085m descent.

On this day we summit Mount Kenya on the third highest peak. For this reason, the day starts at 3.am in order to reach pt Lenana in time to bask in the African sunrise.

The final stretch to pt Lenana starts on frozen scree and continues onto a rocky track. On a cloudless night with a good moon, we’ll barely need a torch. Even without a moon, the light pollution-free sky and the countless stars of the Milky way’s spiral arm bangs on the ground giving you a pretty good view.

The climb takes 3 -4 hours to get to the summit. Once pt Lenana, apart from the mesmerizing sunrise, you also get a great view of Mt. Kilimanjaro from the horizon.

Our descent through Chogoria route begins with a short trek to Minto’s hut where we have breakfast and a short rest. The last stretch of our Mount Kenya hike continues further down to Mount Kenya bandas along gorges valley. On this valley you can enjoy spectacular views of Lake Michaelson, The Temple, Giant billiards table, and Mushroom rocks.  We have our final dinner and overnight at the Bandas and enjoy log fires, hot showers, and bedrest.

Route details & planning

Mount Kenya Sirimon route is regarded as the most popular route for trekking Mount Kenya for good reason. This route offers a gradual climb with some of the most scenic sites on the mountain. Expect to pass through stunning valleys, cross rivers, and watch diverse landscapes seamlessly transition from one to another.

Mount Kenya Chogoria route, on the other hand, is more difficult than Sirimon. It has a mix of steep and gentle tracks (emphasis on the steep) work well to complement the relative gentleness of Sirimon. And when it comes to scenery, the Chogoria route is often described as the most scenic route of the two.

Safe to say that this route combo is the best to take when trekking Mount Kenya as they perfectly complement each other in difficulty, climate, and diversity.

Our Mount Kenya trekking tours ensure a well-rounded hiking experience with professional guides and porters.
