Melting ice on Mount Kilimanjaro summit on a clear sunny day. Get to the summit via Lemosho route.

Lemosho is the most scenic route on Mount Kilimanjaro, every day offers something new to appreciate. The chances of seeing wildlife while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro are high on this route. It is quiet and less crowded since not many climbers use this route. The trails are long but with slow ascent this helps the body to adapt, increasing success rate to the summit Uhuru peak

Mount Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route 7-day Itinerary - EquitorialStar

Day 1; Nairobi – Arusha/Moshi

Depart from Nairobi in the morning for Moshi or Arusha arriving late afternoon spend the rest of the day relaxing. Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Moshi/Arusha is better in acclimatizing for the Mount Kilimanjaro hike.

Day 2; Mount Kilimanjaro Londorossi Gate – Mti Mkubwa Camp

A drive to the Londorossi Park Gate (2100m) from Moshi takes about 2 hours. Enjoy the black and white Columbus monkeys as you await clearance at the gate. From the gate a drive to Lemosho Glades a quick stop over for a picnic lunch. A pleasant Mount Kilimanjaro nature walk through the forest occasionally seeing monkeys and if you are lucky the water buffaloes. 3 hours later the trail leads to Mti Mkubwa (big tree) campsite. Here we have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3; Mti Mkubwa Camp – Mount Kilimanjaro Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast we leave Mti Mkubwa camp and continue climbing Mount Kilimanjaro through the forest that clears to reveal the magnificent giant heathers on the moorland zone. The hike is extremely steep and requires lots of rest time. The Mount Kilimanjaro hike leads to the Shira plateau before getting to the camp. There are beautiful views along the way and streams to quench your thirst. A journey that would take about 5 hours is covered in a day making the steep climb less strenuous. Dinner and overnight at the Shira 2 camp.

Day 4; Shira – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp Mt Kilimanjaro

This is a long and tough day hiking Mount Kilimanjaro we advise our guests to sip water every chance they get. The hig altitudes and low oxygen are likely to cause headaches, irritability and breathlessness.
The trail takes us east into an arid area, very rocky and barren sans plant life. 5 hours into the day’s Mount Kilimanjaro hike we stop for a picnic lunch and ascend the rocky screen path to Lava Tower.
After getting to the Lava tower we descend for about 2 hours before getting to the Barranco camp. The combination of Mount Kilimanjaro ascent and descent on this day is great for acclimatization. The camp being in the valley offers some of the best views in Mt Kilimanjaro; the southern glaciers, plains, Western Breach and Breach Wall. And as the day comes to an end the sunset from the camp is picture perfect. Dinner and overnight at the Barranco camp.

Day 5; Mount Kilimanjaro Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp

After breakfast we ascend the Great Barranco Wall that seems intimidating but it is much easier than expected. The sight of the Heim Glacier as you rest is worth the challenging Mount Kilimanjaro hike. After which we descend to the Karanga Valley that join the Mweka route which we’ll use to descend after getting to Mount Kilimanjaro summit. An hour later we get to the Barafu Hut. It’s important to familiarize yourself with this rocky ridge in order to avoid accidents when it gets dark. True to its name ‘Barafu’ which means ice, it gets freezing cold at night having water from the thermal flasks helps. Prepare your equipment and gears for it’s the last night before the Mount Kilimanjaro summit attempt

Day 6; Mt Kilimanjaro Barafu camp (4550m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka

A few minutes before midnight we take a hot drink and some snacks. The food acts as fuel for the final climb; Mount Kilimanjaro peak. The ascent to Mount Kilimanjaro summit begins through the rocky steep slope. The first stop is the Stella Point on the crater rim, here we rest as we enjoy the beautiful sunrise that has soft colors that favor taking pictures of the plains, valleys and glaciers below. After that short rest we continue climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak the highest point in Africa at 5895m. Descend to Barafu camp for a meal and continue further down Mt Kilimanjaro to Mweka hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 7; Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate | End of Mount Kilimanjaro Hike

After a well-deserved rest we have breakfast and start the journey to the Mweka gate which takes around 3 hours. Enjoy the lasts scenes of the moorland and rainforest as you exit Mt Kilimanjaro.
