See What Majestic Mount Kenya has to Offer with Sirimon Chogoria Route

A group of tourists hiking through mountain vegetation during a Mount Kenya hike trip in Kenya.

Climbing Mount Kenya through Sirimon and Chogoria combines the best scenery and accommodation in huts. It is a relatively gentle climb with enough challenge to keep it exciting. Sirimon on the northwest of Mount Kenya is dry making it pleasant to climb with huge trees and rocky landscape. The descent on the Chogoria route offers the most picturesque scenes like the temple, waterfalls, tarns and wildlife

5 Days Mount Kenya Hike Itinerary Through Sirimon Chogoria Route

Day 1: Nairobi – Sirimon Gate- Old Moses Camp. (3,300m) 3-4 Hrs. 9Km

A drive to Nanyuki town for lunch from Nairobi to the Sirimon Park gate (2660m) at the foot of Mount Kenya. We begin our Mount Kenya hike by climbing up through the towering forest and bamboo before getting to the vast moorland covered with heather that leads to Old Moses (3,300m) for dinner and overnight. This is a gentle trek that takes 3 – 4 hrs. around 680m ascend

Day 2: Old Moses – Shipton Camp (4200m) 7 Hrs.14Km, 900M Ascent

After breakfast we continue climbing Mount Kenya uphill, branching left at the junction. After one hour from Old Moses Camp, the path brings us to Ontulili River where we briefly rest to drink and refill our water bottles. We continue to climb Mount Kenya through the Moorland and crossing Liki North up to Mackinder’s Valley; the view of the main peaks is stunning as they are visible from the valley. We settle for dinner and night rest at the Shipton Camp Mount Kenya (4200m.)

Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Shipton Camp

To better acclimatize to the high altitude of the highest mountain in Kenya, we take a rest day at the Shipton camp. This day consists walking to Hausberg tarns and climbing Oblong gaining an elevation of 370m. We return to the camp for lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing and enjoying Mount Kenya scenic views.

Day 4: Shipton – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Mount Kenya Bandas (2,900m) 11-12 hrs. 785 Ascent, 2,085 Descent.

This day’s Mount Kenya safari starts before dawn at 3.am taking about 4 hours to reach point Lenana in time for the African Sunrise. On dark nights you’ll need a torch, though at times the moon and stars illuminate the rocky path. The soft light of the sunrise makes the view of Mt Kilimanjaro, glaciers and valleys picture perfect. After, descend to the Minto’s hut for a full breakfast. We descend further to Mount Kenya Bandas through the Gorges valley with memorable scenes of the Temple, Lake Michaelson, Mushroom rocks and Giants billiards table mountain.

We finalize our day’s descent down Mount Kenya with dinner and overnight stay at the Mt Kenya Bandas. An added luxury of a hot shower and a warm log fire should have you ready for the next day’s final descent.

Day 5: Meru Bandas - Chogoria Town. 10km

We finish our descent down the highest mountain in Kenya early morning after breakfast, on a wide path sheered by bamboo and rain forest. Finally, we get an awaiting vehicle that will take us to Chogoria town and further to Nairobi arriving early in the evening.
